Privacy Policy

Effective July 6, 2026

FilmSchool is a film-education app — flashcards, quizzes, and daily games about film history, theory, and craft — available at filmschool.app and as an iOS app. This policy explains, in plain language, what data we handle and why.

The short version: we collect the minimum needed to save your learning progress, we don’t run ads, and we never sell your data.

What we collect

Account information. You can sign in with Google or continue as a guest.

  • If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, profile picture, and a unique account ID from Google.
  • If you continue as a guest, a random anonymous ID is created so your progress can be saved. It is not connected to your name or email.

Learning progress. Your study state (spaced-repetition scheduling for each card), quiz and trivia statistics, daily-game results, streaks, badges, and pools of questions you’ve missed. This is stored under your account ID so your progress follows you across devices.

Nothing else. We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, health data, microphone audio, or advertising identifiers. The iOS app contains no analytics or advertising SDK.

What we don’t do

  • We do not show ads.
  • We do not sell your data or share it with anyone for marketing.
  • We do not track you across other apps or websites.
  • We do not use third-party advertising or analytics networks.

Aggregate counters. The app and website increment first-party, anonymous usage counters — shared daily totals such as how many people played today’s puzzle. These are plain tallies with no per-user records attached.

Website telemetry. While the iOS app contains no analytics SDK, the filmschool.app website uses Google Firebase’s built-in telemetry (Google Analytics for Firebase and Firebase Performance Monitoring) to measure aggregate usage and performance — things like page-load times and error counts. This data is processed by Google as our service provider, is not used to show you ads, and is never sold.

Where your data lives

Your account and progress are stored with Google Firebase: Firebase Authentication handles sign-in, and Cloud Firestore stores your progress. The website runs on Google Cloud Run. Data is stored on Google’s servers in the United States. Google processes this data on our behalf and under our instructions.

Cookies

The website sets one cookie: a session cookie (__session) that keeps you signed in, for up to 12 days. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

Film data and images

Film titles, credits, posters, and stills come from TMDB (The Movie Database). When the app shows a poster or still, your device loads the image directly from TMDB’s image servers — so TMDB receives your IP address the same way any image host does. We do not send TMDB anything else about you.

This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.

How long we keep your data

Until you delete your account. When you do, your user record and all progress data are removed from our database, and your sign-in record is removed from Firebase Authentication.

Deleting your account

  • In the iOS app: Profile → Delete Account.
  • By email: write to bryan.tinsley@gmail.com from the email address linked to your account, and we will delete it.

Guest progress is tied only to a random anonymous ID; if you never sign in, that data identifies no one.

Children

FilmSchool is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the effective date. If a change meaningfully affects how your data is handled, we will say so prominently in the app or on the site.
